Can allergies cause inflammation in your body?

To put it succinctly: allergic reactions can cause inflammation in your body. Allergic reactions happen when a person is exposed to an allergen, their body releases allergic (IgE) antibodies. These antibodies find the molecules of the allergen in both the bloodstream and tissue and push them towards mast cells (a kind of white blood cell) to eliminate them. As this elimination is occurring, histamine is released into the bloodstream. Large amounts of histamine cause inflammation (swelling of bodily tissues), itching, enlarges blood vessels, and broncospasm (a tightening of the muscles which surround the airway).

Can allergies cause chronic inflammation?

As inflammation is caused by the body’s immune system, it is characterized by an influx of white blood cells, redness, heat, swelling, pain, and dysfunction of involved organs, it can be categorized by which part of the body is affected. With allergies, allergens bind to antibodies, which trigger the release of histamine which causes allergy symptoms. While inflammation caused by allergies is usually temporary, it can persist for much longer. If that is the case, and the immune system is always active, then it is known as chronic inflammation and can possibly lead to chronic disease.

There are treatments available for the treatment of chronic inflammation caused by allergies. If your inflammation lasts longer than is usual, please speak with your doctor or health care professional.

What are the five classic signs of inflammation?

While there are several symptoms of inflammation, there are five classic signs of inflammation. Typically, however, these five signs of inflammation are: heat; pain; redness; swelling; and a loss of function. As such, a common acronym is used for the symptoms, that being “PRISH” – which stands for pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

There are multiple possible causes for a loss of function, while the redness and heat are caused by increased blood flow to the area; swelling is caused by an accumulation of fluid at the area, and pain is due to the release of such chemicals as bradykinin and histamine, which stimulate the nerve endings. These symptoms are usually localized to a particular area – in the case of skin allergies, usually the site of exposure – but can also be more generalized in the case of an allergic reaction.
