Overview of the Service
Arthritis is defined as inflammation of one or more of your joints. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and stiffness. Any joint in the body may be affected by the disease, but it is particularly common in the knee. The knee is the largest and strongest joint in your body, and dealing with knee arthritis clearly can be frustrating.
Here at AIH, we have multiple ways to help you deal with your knee arthritis. We offer SUPARTZ injections, which are intended to lubricate the joint so as to ease the friction in the knee. Our first step is to inject a dye into the joint to make sure the sac is intact and that the injection won’t leak out. We use video fluoroscopy, which is essentially an x-ray inside the knee so that we can eliminate all guesswork on whether or not we are injecting directly into the joint.
We do a series of five injections, once a week, to build up a tolerance and slowly increase the dosage. In most cases, patients see benefits for six to twelve months. This procedure can also be done repetitively. Once a patient stops seeing benefits, they can repeat the injections again. Often, we will follow up the injections with bracing of the knee and therapy so that we can keep the knee stable and strengthened.
Besides pain relief and strengthening the knee, one major benefit of these injections is avoiding total knee replacement. We want to do everything we can to help the patient in their day in and day out lives, and avoid taking any unnecessary risks.
